AutoCAD - Automatic Dimension

In AutoCAD, Automatic Dimensioning refers to tools and features that allow you to quickly add dimensions to objects without manually selecting every point. This can significantly speed up your workflow, especially in technical drawings. Here's a breakdown of how to use automatic dimension tools:

 1. DIM (Dimension) Command
The DIM command (introduced in AutoCAD 2016) automatically detects what you're trying to dimension—lines, circles, angles, etc.—based on your cursor location.

How to use:
  • Type DIM and press Enter.
  • Hover over objects — AutoCAD will suggest the appropriate dimension (linear, radial, angular, etc.).
  • Click to place the dimension.

 2. Quick Dimension (QDIM)
The QDIM command places multiple dimensions at once based on selected objects.

How to use:
  • Type QDIM and press Enter.
  • Select the objects or points you want to dimension.
  • Right-click or press Enter.
  • Choose the dimension type (horizontal, vertical, aligned).
  • Click to place them.

3. Auto Dimension in Layouts (with Annotative Scaling)

If you're working in Paper Space and using Annotative Dimensions, AutoCAD can automatically scale dimensions according to the viewport scale. This isn't "auto-dimensioning" per se, but it makes layout management much easier.

Tips for Better Auto Dimensioning
  • Use DIMSTYLE to control dimension appearance (text size, arrows, precision, etc.).
  • Ensure OSNAP and Object Snap Tracking are turned on for precise dimensions.
  • You can also create Dynamic Blocks with dimensions that auto-update when resized.
